Session 3 Add-On: Hormonal Component
For Women — Perimenopause & Menopause
Recognising how the hormonal shifts of perimenopause and menopause intensify neurodivergent traits and emotional regulation.
The decline of oestrogen directly impacts dopamine regulation in the brain — this is why ADHD symptoms like brain fog, forgetfulness, and reduced focus often worsen noticeably during this life stage, and why autistic traits like sensory sensitivity, social anxiety, and executive function difficulties can intensify
Women with ADHD often experience more severe perimenopausal symptoms, with symptom severity peaking between ages 35–39
Why coping strategies that worked for decades may suddenly stop working — this isn't personal failure, it's hormonal
Why this is often the exact life stage when women first discover they're neurodivergent
Discussion of cycle/symptom tracking and where medical support (such as HRT) may be worth raising with your GP
For Men — Andropause & Testosterone
Recognising how declining testosterone levels in midlife can intensify neurodivergent traits, fatigue, and emotional regulation.
Testosterone declines gradually from the 30s/40s onward (roughly 1% per year) — slower than the female hormonal transition, but shown to equally impact ADHD symptom severity, with andropause often inciting significant life changes
Common experiences include increased irritability, anger, low mood, reduced motivation, fatigue, and a sense of unravelling often attributed to circumstance rather than hormones
Why this stage is often mistaken for "just a midlife crisis" or straightforward depression, when it may actually be years of masking meeting a body and brain with fewer resources left to sustain it
The difference between normal age-related decline and clinical hypogonadism (worth ruling out with your GP)
Discussion of where medical investigation (bloodwork, GP referral) may support the therapeutic work
